What are Dermal Fillers?

So this is a question often asked to us by new clients. The internet is a great resource and something that we as humans rely on every day in these modern times. However, some information can be conflicting and in some cases ‘fake news’. Therefore we want to demystify the information for you and provide a simple explanation.

The face is made up of four main components; skin, muscle, fat, and bone. Naturally as we age we can lose some of our muscle definition and pockets of fat causing changes to our appearance and we see volume loss in the fat tissues or muscle of the face. This can also be the case in sudden weight loss due to dieting. These scenarios are where dermal filler can help.

Dermal filler can be injected beneath the skin or directly onto bone. There are different fillers for different areas, and this relates to the thickness and consistency of the filler itself. All filler is a gel substance, that instantly attracts moisture due to the chemical structure of Hyaluronic Acid (HA). In todays society, the filler most commonly used is HA, as there are fewer complications when compared to silicone and other substances, and the effects are also reversible if needed. A substance called Hyaluronidase can be used to dissolve HA fillers as and when required, which means they are reversible in most cases. HA is naturally occurring in the human body also, therefore it works synergistically when placed. There is also scientific evidence that HA actually stimulates collagen and attracts moisture – which is why we love using HA so much.

When filler is administered by responsible, trained Practitioners the results can be incredibly subtle. The best way to use HA is to replace volume loss and keep a natural, youthful appearance. This in turn gives our clients more confidence in themselves, and is why so many people in todays modern society opt to have treatments.

So, we hope that has given you some brief information and as always, please feel free to get in touch with our team with any questions.

Thank you, Opal & Garnet.
